Best place to sleep under the stars in the UK

Ekopod has been named the best place to sleep under the stars in the UK by Benson Beds.  The accolade was a lovely surprise to wake up to earlier this week!  Various friends and previous guests tagged us in a newspaper article that had covered the story.

The data methodology involved collating scores from trip advisor ratings, a map of UK light pollution and Met Office data. You can read the full article here: Best places to sleep under the stars in the UK.

We’re based on the edge of Bodmin Moor, which was designated International Dark Sky Landscape status in 2017  This made Bodmin Moor the first International Dark Sky Place in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  The beauty of the stars here is one of our favourite things about the site and it never fails to amaze me when I’m outside on a clear evening even after all these years!  When we design our units we try to make sure that our guests have the best possible views of the skies.  So our safari tents have huge balconies you can gaze at the skies from, our geodomes and our glamping pod Steren all have windows above the beds.  Our geodome Peswara and glamping pod Steren also have windows over the bath.  So in Peswara and Steren our guests can both sleep and bathe under the stars!  The views of the stars inspired our name for Steren glamping pod which means ‘stars’ in Cornish.

The best time so sleep under the stars is in the winter when the nights are longer and when there is a new moon so the skies are darker.  We’ve had some beautiful photographs taken and sent to us by our guests and photographers, which we are very grateful for as sadly my camera skills never capture the magic!

Thank you to David Rice, Owen Howells and Brad Thomas for these photos.

For our guests this weekend as long as the weather holds they are in for an extra special view as Friday thing is when the annual Perseid meteor shower peaks…. If you are staying with us or anywhere where you can get a good glimpse of the stars, the best viewing will be early hours of Saturday due to the full moon.  We’re fully booked for this years one but next year’s is scheduled to peak on the 12th August according to in-the-sky.org.  So book here for 2023 if you want to catch it, in the best place to sleep under the stars in the UK!
