Winter in Cornwall

Top 10 Things to Do in Cornwall This Winter

Cornwall in winter is full of quiet magic — from windswept cliffs and candlelit harbours to wildlife spectacles and festive celebrations. Whether you’re seeking coastal adventure, festive events, or cosy relaxation, our winter guide highlights the best experiences in Cornwall near Ekopod.

1. Coastal Walks and Storm-Watching

Experience Cornwall at its wildest. Take a winter walk along the South West Coast Path or other rugged coastal routes, they’re quiet at this time of year. On stormy days, head to safe vantage points like Bedruthan Steps to watch the Atlantic’s raw power. Trebarwith Strand’s Port William Pub has a lovely vantage point, 25 minutes from us.

2. Visit Cornwall’s Winter Beaches

Cornwall’s beaches are breathtaking in winter — wide, empty, and alive with the sound of the surf.  Also they don’t have the summer dog bans, so your dog can enjoy it as much as you!  If you love cold-water swimming, head to Bude Sea Pool at Summerleaze beach, where many brave the chill year-round. Even if you just go to watch, it’s an inspiring sight!

3. Enjoy Christmas lights!

Discover the winter charm of Boscastle, Port Isaac, and other fishing villages. Wander narrow streets, browse local crafts, and enjoy a warm drink by the harbour lights.

For an indoor Christmas light experience visit Carnglaze Caverns to see their illuminated Winter Wonderland in the lower cavern. Throughout December, the Christmas Craft Market and Santa grotto visits make this underground cavern a magical winter attraction for families.

4. Indoor Adventures for Rainy Days

Cornwall shines indoors too.  Wet day?  We recommending heading to the Eden Project for a magical festive experience.

From 21 Nov 2025 to 4 Jan 2026, the Biomes are transformed in the evening with immersive Christmas lights, music, and colour displays. Families can meet Father Christmas and his elves, enjoy seasonal food and drink, or try the ice rink — perfect for a winter day out, rain or shine.

The heated biomes are also lovely and toasty whatever the weather outside!

5. Cosy Pub Lunches and Local Food

Cornwall’s country pubs are perfect for warming up after a chilly walk. Enjoy crackling fires, hearty meals, and local ales at the Rising Sun at Altarnun, a charming stop for traditional Cornish hospitality.  Or head to The Port William for those sea views.

6. Padstow Christmas Fayre (December 4–7, 2025)

Padstow’s harbour sparkles with a four-day celebration of Cornish food and drink. Watch chefs like Rick Stein and Paul Ainsworth in action, explore the artisan market, enjoy fireworks, lanterns, and carols — all for free, supporting local charities.

7. Cotehele Christmas Garland

Visit Cotehele House to see the 60-foot Great Hall garland made from thousands of flowers grown and dried on the estate. Enjoy crafts at the mill, sing carols by the tree, and savour a festive drink for a magical Cornish Christmas experience.

8. Bodmin Railway Santa

Step aboard the heritage Bodmin Railway Santa Express on weekends throughout December, plus 22–24 Dec, for festive fun. Children meet Father Christmas and elves, enjoy treats, and soak up the magical steam train atmosphere.

For a quieter experience, the Quiet Santa Train runs 7 and 21 Dec, with low lighting, reduced capacity, and a calm festive environment.

9. Winter Wildlife and Starling Murmurations at Roughtor

Autumn Starlings

From November to March, thousands of starlings gather above Roughtor, creating spectacular murmuration displays.  I strongly recommend seeing this natural wonder while you are here!

  • Best viewed an hour before sunset from Roughtor Road.

  • Bring a flask and wrap up warm to enjoy the aerial display.

  • Combine with a walk up Roughtor or Brown Willy, Cornwall’s highest point, for panoramic winter views.

10. Rest, Restore and Reconnect at Ekopod

After a day exploring, retreat to Ekopod’s peaceful pods. Soak in a bath with a view, unwind in our Wild Spa, or stargaze by the fire pit. Winter at Ekopod is about slowing down, connecting with nature, and enjoying luxurious, off-grid comfort.

I hope you enjoyed our guide to the top 10 things to do in Cornwall this winter!
